Fortinet Launches Cloud-Native Protection Solution

Unveiled today at Amazon’s re:Inforce conference, FortiCNP draws on input from Fortinet’s Security Fabric and integration with the new Amazon GuardDuty Malware Protection solution to provide prioritized, actionable information on vulnerable assets.

Fortinet has introduced a cloud-native protection solution designed to provide comprehensive security for workloads in public clouds like Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform.

The security vendor introduced the new offering, called FortiCNP, on the opening day of Amazon’s re:Inforce security event, which takes place today and tomorrow in Boston. Fortinet announced as well at that show that it’s a launch partner for Amazon GuardDuty Malware Protection, a just-shipped addition to the AWS security stack designed to detect malicious files in Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud environments.

“At AWS, we provide our customers with smarter tools to easily take action and mitigate risk faster,” said Jon Ramsey, vice president of AWS Security, in a press statement. “Security Partners like Fortinet with their FortiCNP offering built on AWS and integrated with our security services like Amazon GuardDuty give customers a choice to simplify and accelerate their cloud journey with cloud-native security services.”

Core features of FortiCNP include “Resource Risk Insights” reports that draw on input from across Fortinet’s integrated Security Fabric and a patented risk score algorithm to provide prioritized, actionable information on potentially vulnerable assets. The system can automatically execute stop-gap remediations as well via solutions like FortiGate-VM and FortiWeb.

Integrations with Amazon GuardDuty Malware Protection leverage a zero-permission, agentless approach for detecting malware throughout the data supply chain by scanning cloud data stores, disk volumes, and workload images.

According to Fortinet, FortiCNP also protects against vulnerabilities in container images and registries, and simplifies compliance with regulations like HIPAA and GDPR as well as standards like ISO 27001 and the NIST Cybersecurity Framework.

“FortiCNP is the latest example of Fortinet’s commitment to delivering Fabric solutions that extend enterprise security with cloud-native integrations,” said John Maddison, Fortinet’s executive vice president of products and CMO, in supplied remarks. “We’re pleased to continue to deliver solutions that allow security professionals to transition from time-consuming triage and manual analysis processes to proactively securing their cloud workloads and easily understand their cloud security risk.”

Today’s announcement is the latest example of ongoing collaboration between Fortinet and AWS on cloud security. In a further manifestation of that relationship, Fortinet also disclosed that it’s now an AWS Security Competency Partner this morning.

Elsewhere at re:Inforce, cloud area networking vendor Alkira announced an integration alliance with Fortinet that enables automated configuration and deployment of firewall services within Alkira networks on major public clouds.

“Customers can immediately spin up and autoscale their Fortinet firewalls across the Cloud Area Networking infrastructure,” said Atif Khan, Alkira’s CTO, in a media statement. “There’s no complicated routing domains, no risk of overprovisioning, and no more deployment delays.”

Fortinet introduced FortiRecon, a digital risk protection platform that combines integrated external attack surface management, brand protection, and adversary-centric intelligence services, last month.

Over half of all spending on application software, infrastructure software, business process services, and system infrastructure will happen in public clouds by 2025, according to Gartner, up from 41% this year. That trend will drive outlays on cloud management and security up 15% to some $35.2 billion worldwide in the next year alone, the analyst says.
