Diskeeper Corp. rolled out the latest iteration of its V-locity virtual disk optimizer last week.
V-locity is designed to deliver invisible background optimization of all Windows guest operating systems running on the VMware ESX and Microsoft Hyper-V platforms. The latest version, 2.0, adds IntelliWrite fragmentation-prevention technology.
IntelliWrite was originally introduced with Diskeeper 2010. With it, V-locity 2.0 writes files to the disk to help prevent fragmentation from occurring at source.
V-locity is software that is specific to the virtual environment. In addition to defragmentation, it also synchronises the complex, ongoing activity between host and multiple guest operating systems.
“Fragmented disk subsystems can lead to an inability to run more virtual machines on a given hardware infrastructure, and performance bottlenecks for VMs that share a common storage subsystem,” explains Diskeeper’s business development manager Thomas Doria. “V-locity is designed to alleviate the ‘virtual’ disk bottleneck for VMs and provide a faster and more efficient computing platform without having to add more hardware.”
V-locity 2.0 also frees up vital storage resources by eliminating virtual disk “bloat”–that is, the wasted disk space that occurs when virtual disks are set to dynamically grow, but do not. The software compacts the virtual disk, helping prevent wasted virtual storage resources.
V-locity 2.0 consists of three components:
- V-locity Host–Installed in the VMware ESX Host or Windows Server 2008/R2 operating system running Hyper-V
- V-locity Guest–Installed in all Windows virtual machines.
- VMware ESX Platform App–A small application that enables remote connection from a Windows desktop to the V-locity Host component on an ESX system
V-locity 2.0 has also features:
- InvisiTasking–Coordinates resource usage to help ensure defrag is invisible
- IntelliWrite–Prevents fragmentation and facilitates compatibility in various environments
- Virtual Disk Intelligence–Automatically detects and configures based on virtual disk type
- Virtual Disk Compaction–Shrinks/compacts virtual disks set to grow as needed
