CompTIA/ChannelPro Scholarship Award Helping Inaugural Winner Pursue Career in IT: Page 2 of 2

Sarah Johnson, the first-ever winner of an award named after former ChannelPro Executive Editor Cecilia Galvin that goes to young women interested in technology, is putting both the funding and the vote of confidence she received to good use in college. By Rich Freeman

Attending ChannelCon, CompTIA’s annual member event, to accept her award also had an impact on Johnson. “Being able to meet all the types of people that were at ChannelCon and see what they were doing in their field definitely made me want to invest in myself to try to put more things on my resume to help me get to where I want to go,” she says.

Last year’s Cecilia Galvin Scholarship Award was worth $2,500. This year the winner will receive $5,000 that they can use at a four-year college or trade school, or apply toward CompTIA certifications. All nominees must be high school seniors with a 2.7 or higher GPA. Sarah Johnson's mother Audrey Johnson urges as many young women as possible to put their name in the ring.

“I frequently see articles in the news about the lack of and need for women in the STEM field," she says. “If we are going to influence and encourage the next generation of scientists,  we must find the rising stars at the high school level and foster their future development through honors and awards that will motivate them to continue  their scientific endeavors.”

CompTIA distributes three other AWIT Spotlight Awards annually as well. The Technical Pacesetter Award goes to an individual with outstanding technical skills who is recognized in her organization and the industry for exceptional customer or community service. The Mentorship Guide Award recognizes a committed mentor to other women in IT who excels at one-to-one network building. The Industry Leadership Award, finally, honors an acknowledged technology industry innovator and authority who is active both in the IT community and her own personal community.

Nominations for all four AWIT Spotlight Awards close on June 1st. The nominating form, and additional information about the awards program, are available here.
