Acronis Announces Open APIs for its Acronis Cyber Platform

Part of a larger move by Acronis from BDR and storage into security as well, the new interfaces are designed to let a broad ecosystem of technology partners tailor Acronis solutions to specific needs or weave those solutions together with their own.

Acronis has announced plans to add open APIs to the technology foundation underlying its backup, storage, and disaster recovery products.

In early access release now, and scheduled to enter general availability this October, the new interfaces are designed to help software vendors, hardware makers, solution providers, and others add customized data sources, data locations, and data management features to the Acronis Cyber Platform, or integrate that platform with their own applications, devices, and online marketplaces.

In conjunction with the API launch, Acronis also introduced new names for two other core technologies: The product formerly known as Acronis Data Cloud is now named Acronis Cyber Cloud, while the former Acronis Software Defined Infrastructure is now called Acronis Cyber Infrastructure.

The next release of Acronis Cyber Cloud, the company stated today, will add backup and crypto-mining protection for Google G Suite. It’s is slated to reach market within the next few days.

The Acronis Cyber Platform already has APIs, but only authorized integration partners like ConnectWise, Microsoft, and Google have access to them. The new APIs unveiled today will let a significantly larger and more varied ecosystem of technology partners tailor Acronis solutions to specific needs or weave those solutions together with their own.

“Extending our proven cyber protection solutions with the opening of our platform and its APIs brings our vision to market and presents an opportunity for ISVs, OEMs, service providers and developers at organizations to extend their applications and extend the functionality of the Acronis suite or cyber protection solutions and make them available to our partner ecosystem,” said Serguei Beloussov, the founder and CEO of Acronis, in prepared remarks.

“We’re known for engineering excellence and we hope to see rapid innovation by developers around the world as they leverage the massive growth of the world’s data, coming from sources such as AI, IoT, edge, and cloud. ISVs, OEMs, service providers, customers and partners can differentiate and drive revenue for their businesses by building on the Acronis Cyber Platform and accessing the Acronis value chain.”

Today’s announcement is a key step in a larger strategic effort by Acronis to turn its existing solution portfolio into an integrated suite of data protection offerings combining backup and storage functionality with cybersecurity capabilities from both Acronis itself and outside developers.

“We have customers that are consuming backup, disaster recovery, and file sync and share from our portfolio today. By the end of this year, customers will have a much wider suite of solutions to be able to upsell and cross-sell,” said Pat Hurley, vice president and general manager for the Americas at Acronis, in a recent interview with ChannelPro.

The vendor will add an important component to that suite in October, during its Global Cyber Summit partner event, when it releases Acronis Total Protect, a forthcoming offering that combines backup, cybersecurity, and system management technology in one integrated package.

Carbonite is also re-positioning itself as a data protection vendor with both BDR and security offerings, most recently through its $618.5 million acquisition of Webroot Inc.
