Eaton’s Intelligent Power Software Suite Hits the Channel

The suite combines Eaton’s Intelligent Power Manager with Intelligent Power Protector, and it is compatible with network-enabled devices that can be controlled via the Web.

Eaton Corp. introduced its Intelligent Power Software Suite this week. The comprehensive software solution incorporates Eaton’s power management, monitoring, and protection technologies so that IT managers can manage power devices for traditional IT infrastructures or in virtualized environments.

The software suite is a combination of Eaton’s Intelligent Power Manager, which provides monitoring and management of power devices across an IT network, and Eaton’s Intelligent Power Protector, which is designed to conduct a safe shutdown of critical servers or virtual machines when an extended power outage occurs.

According to Eaton Corp., Intelligent Power Manager is supervisory software that enables a wide range of power and environmental devices to be controlled through a single, Web-based interface.

The software is compatible with network-enabled power devices, including Eaton and third-party uninterruptible power systems (UPSs), environmental sensors, and power distribution units.

“Eaton’s Intelligent Power Software Suite is one of the industry’s most advanced, yet easy-to-use power management offerings,” boasts the company’s own Hervé Tardy, vice president and general manager, distributed power quality division. “Eaton’s unique core of reusable modular software objects allows for a lightweight application that consumes minimal vital memory space on servers,” he says.

Intelligent Power Manager is indeed the first power management software to integrate with VMware’s vCenter, enabling users to manage power in a virtualized environment through the vCenter dashboard. The software also integrates with vMotion, which transparently moves applications from a server affected by a power interruption to a non-affected server on the network without downtime.

Eaton’s Intelligent Power Protector software is designed to protect IT systems when the power goes out for longer than the UPS’s available battery runtime. The software facilitates automatic shutdown of computers, virtual machines, servers, and network devices powered by an Eaton UPS. In doing so, it saves all work-in-progress and ensures data integrity. Furthermore, its versatile user interface shows users detailed information about connected servers and UPSs through USB, serial, or network communication.

The multi-platform Intelligent Power Management suite is available at no charge for up to 10 IP addresses. Intelligent Power Protector is free of charge.
