Rising Data Volumes Threaten to Trap Businesses in Unstructured Territory

With the right backup, replication, and recovery, however, your customers can move to the cloud and feel confident their data will remain protected, secured, and managed.

In the past decade, the technology industry has gone through a radical transformation that has caused an overwhelming increase in the amount of data being produced. Research indicates that we’re making quintillions of bytes of data every day. As organizations work to manage this massive amount of information, the overflow of unstructured data—which includes things like tweets and texts—is generating new challenges, making it increasingly harder to have clear visibly into their data. To both manage and protect these growing datasets, businesses need to embrace the next era of digital transformation—cloud.

Many leaders remain wary of migration challenges, and are delaying or abandoning efforts over concerns regarding data privacy, security, and anticipated technical obstacles. Yet transitioning to the cloud doesn’t have to be a hardship. There are ways IT solution providers and managed service providers can help their customers properly and simply protect, secure, and manage the exponential increase in data during cloud migrations, so they no longer have to worry about being caught in unstructured data territory. Let’s explore three best practices in more detail.

Leverage Data Replication and Backup to Eliminate Data Loss

In addition to ensuring data is stored securely, IT departments and MSPs must make sure data is available at all times during a migration. Fear of data loss due to situations like unpredictable outages is a barrier organizations must overcome. What’s more, there is a common misconception that the cloud and cloud providers offer the protection businesses need. Although most cloud providers deliver excellent up-time for their infrastructures, they do not protect against data loss, ransomware, accidental deletion, data corruption, or rogue users. This responsibility remains with the organization’s IT provider.

By implementing data replication and backup solutions, MSPs can ensure that their customers’ application data is captured during incremental backups and scalable protection is available. Replication enables faster data access. What’s more, even though it may seem like a lengthy process, backing up data doesn’t actually take very long. Some solutions can do it in mere seconds, which makes a huge difference when dealing with compound data growth. MSPs can also facilitate the larger-scale sharing of their customers’ data by integrating it across cloud and on-premises infrastructure—copying, filtering, transforming, and moving it among multiple systems. As a result, businesses never have to worry about whether or not they can access their data files, regardless of volume.

Flexible Solutions That Fit Your Customers’ Infrastructure

As organizations look to manage and migrate growing amounts of data, they often get sidetracked by hardware and software constraints that limit compatibility with backup solutions. In addition, with more and more traditional media being converted to digital, it’s essential that organizations aren’t bogged down by poorly functioning systems. Today, your customers should be able to protect, manage, and unlock all types of storage that the industry uses with a single platform that does not limit the overall scale or performance.

Storage-agnostic platforms not only enable your customers to work with whichever hardware and cloud provider they want, but also don’t require them to sacrifice the assets already in place to ensure that they can back up their data successfully while moving to the cloud. Your customers shouldn’t have to choose between backup and storage solutions. With storage-agnostic platforms, that choice becomes obsolete.

Easily Mitigate Data Loss Gaps to Ensure Security

Data theft is a booming business. With news of cyberbreaches affecting nearly every sector and breaking almost weekly, it’s clear that organizations of every size face the same omnipresent threat of ransomware and hacking. On top of that, the applications they need to protect are evolving, becoming multilayered and more complex, increasing the likelihood of a successful attack by malicious actors.

To eliminate the risk of data loss, MSPs should urge their customers to implement instant recovery. With instant recovery, organizations can run a virtual machine directly from a backup file. By having this “”temporary spare”” for a virtual machine, an organization can access its full data set as quickly as one minute after files are corrupted, limiting downtime and ensuring business continuity. Should a disaster strike, your customer will be able to recover large amounts of data as quickly as possible.

When it comes time to discuss digital transformation, your customers shouldn’t have to compromise between data protection and data management. Data is exponentially growing, and as the Internet of Things infiltrates the daily lives of businesses and consumers alike, it will only continue increasing. With the right backup, replication, and recovery, your customers will never have to question whether their data will remain protected, secured, and managed.
