For International Women’s Day, IBM released a global study titled, “Women, leadership, and missed opportunities,” following a similar project published in 2019. Top line news? Gender equality is still not a top priority for 70% of global businesses. The COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown heightened the challenges for women in the workplace, resulting in fewer women holding senior roles such as senior vice president, vice president, director, and manager in 2021 than they did in 2019. Women on the job are less optimistic about the commitment of their organizations to improving gender parity, with the current 62% of hopefuls a drop of 9% from 2019. Ideas for the future include making gender equity a top five formal business priority, applying specific crisis-related interventions such as backup childcare and improved mental health resources, creating a culture of intention, and making room for women in management.
