Western Digital Velociraptor 600GB Review

There’s a fine line between buying an SSD drive and buying a fast HDD of the same general size. The rule of thumb is that you can potentially buy 4 or even 5 Western Digital Velociraptor drives for the price of a single 512GB SSD drive. Or alternatively you can buy two 600GB Velociraptor for the price of a 256GB SSD drive. To get the same price range as a Velociraptor you would need to buy a 128GB SSD drive, meaning you get a lot more storage space for less performance. Western Digital feels there’s a balance to be had in price per GB as well as performance and I completely agree. SSD drives are faster and are good to have, but until the price on larger capacity drives comes down the market for the Velociraptor or drives like it will exist. When compared to a single 300GB Velociraptor drive, the 600GB model is faster in every benchmark and has double the storage. Versus a Kingston 128GB SSD drive the Velociraptor fares worse, but again the question becomes is 128GB enough for your needs? SSD drives have a lot of advantages over traditional HDDs like the Velociraptor, but the 600GB Velociraptor is an excellent drive that delivers decent storage capacity at a reasonable price with performance outshining that of other HDDs.
