Withings Packs Environmental Sensors and Security Camera into Smart Home Product

The new option can track environment, movement, and even specific people.

Items like smart scales and activity trackers may scare away the average sloth. However, Withings has added a smart home product to its lineup that should interest just about anyone. Meet the Withings Home.

The Withings Home features an HD security camera and environmental sensors, all inside one little device. What really sets the Home apart from other security devices are those sensors, which don’t just alert you to motion, but also focus on air quality—something we should all be concerned about.

Those sensors can actually measure temperature and humidity, as well as levels of Volatile Organic Compound (VOC). Once something out of the ordinary is detected, the system can alert users.

The camera is pretty cool as well, offering a real-time peek at your home from almost anywhere. It also has a 135-degree wide-angle zoom, night vision, and the ability to recognize its users. That last item is something that even some of the best security cameras don’t have—and it’s very cool, since it can eliminate a lot of false reports. Instead, it lets you know when the baby is crying or when the dog is rolling around on the couch. And it can alert you to those moments using smartphone notifications and cloud-stored recordings. It can also track noteworthy incidents in a home diary, with an interactive timeline.

Another nifty perk is that Withings Home looks cool. Instead of the usual plastic-y appearance, this one is made from real wood, so it can be a real conversation piece. Other features include two digital microphones and an HQ speaker, two-way audio with Audio Echo Cancellation and noise reduction, and a remote customizable nightlight.

“All our devices so far have primarily served the body. They provide valuable information around blood pressure, activity levels, weight—all data that can inspire healthy choices in diet, exercise and sleep,” says Withings’ Cedric Hutchings. “With Withings Home, we’re addressing a very critical part of the health and well-being puzzle that has not yet been served by a single device. Home helps ensure your family is both safe and living in a healthy environment.”

The Withings Home is selling now in white with natural wood, with an MSRP of $199.95. The company plans to issue special-edition finishes at a later date.
