WD Purple Hard Drives Designed for Video Surveillance

The recently announced WD Purple line of 3.5-inch high-capacity hard drives provide security professionals a choice of hard drive solutions to store important data files.

Western Digital is one of the most widely known hard drive manufacturers in the entire world of electronics, with its products featured in systems as small as consumer-level home computers, to state-of-the-art, enterprise-grade backup systems.

The Skinny: Adding to its wide selection of products, the company just announced its WD Purple series of hard drives, which are designed to address security system installations.

The Specs: The purpose-built 3.5-inch line of hard drives support systems with as many as eight hard drives and 32 HD cameras. WD offers a choice of storage capacities ranging from 1TBs to 4TBs, and the company says that electronics professionals can install the products into existing security systems or use them as part of new systems.

“By expanding our ‘Power of Choice’ product portfolio with WD Purple, we make it simple for our VARs, integrators and consumers to select the right drive engineered for their application and validated by our industry leading surveillance partners,” states Matt Rutledge, senior vice president and general manager of WD’s Storage Technology Group. “WD optimized the WD Purple line of hard drives for surveillance applications to improve high-definition video playback, and operate in 24×7 workloads of surveillance environments.”

The line of products utilizes other Western Digital technologies such as AllFrame, so that when combined with ATA streaming they help to reduce video footage loss with a proprietary cache policy management technology to help data flow and playback. The line also includes WD’s Advanced Format Technology (AFT) that is said to increase areal densities that are adopted by WD and other drive manufacturers to grow hard drive capacities.

Echoing Rutledge’s statement, Ying Yang, director of testing for Hikvision, adds that the new WD Purple line of products are engineered to withstand the hard use of security applications. “Different from ordinary desktop hard drives designed for eight hours of daily operation, WD Purple drives have the built-in reliability to operate in Hikvision home and small business system installations so critical video footage is available when it is needed the most,” he says. “An additional benefit of WD Purple drives is they support up to eight drives and 32 HD cameras so there is the flexibility to expand for future system coverage.”

Solutions: WD says its new WD Purple line of 3.5-inch hard drives can be used for residential and small business security system installations.
