Wasp Barcode Technologies Intros Mobile Computer, Updates Software

The company aims its new lower-priced WPA1000 mobile computer model at SMBs, and bundles it with an updated version of MobileAsset tracking software.

Wasp Barcode Technologies made two announcements this week. First, the company upgraded its MobileAsset v6 asset tracking software. Second, it has rolled out the WPA1000 mobile computer for SMBs.

Mobile computer lineup is a lower-priced complement to the WPA1200, which is the company’s flagship mobile computer.

“We created the WPA1000 in response to an increasing interest from our customers, who wanted a lower-cost option,” explains Wasp’s vice president and general manager Tom O’Shea. “It carries a fantastic price point that will appeal to a large segment of small businesses.”

The mobile computer unit features a compact design. It sports an integrated la

ser scanner and can be used to read linear barcodes. Users can also update records via the unit’s touch-screen keypad. It boasts a bright TFT screen, with high contrast for outdoor viewing.

Other WPA1000 features include:

  • Seven keys (six feature and one navigation)
  • Virtual keypad on screen for input
  • Intel PX270 520 Mhz processor
  • 64 MB of SDRAM and 53 MB of Flash memory
  • DSIO slot for additional memory needs
  • Bluetooth and 802.11 b/g connectivity
  • Rechargeable lithium ion battery
  • AC power adapter
  • USB communications cable
  • One-year warranty

The WPA1000 is available immediately and can be purchased from such IT resellers as CDW, Insight, and TigerDirect as well as local VARs and from Wasp itself. It sells for $995.

MobileAsset Upgrade
The Wasp WPA1000 ships with Windows Mobile operating system. Customers can purchase Wasp’s MobileAsset asset tracking software in a bundle with the WPA 1000, starting at just $1,495.

SMBs use MobileAsset to track such IT assets as computers, servers, laptops, and software licenses. In addition, it can track a wide range of fixed assets, including copiers, phones, tools, equipment, and more.†

With MobileAsset, the user creates and prints barcoded asset tags, which are affixed to each item and scanned with a barcode scanner. Information about each asset is captured in the MobileAsset software, which can warehouse a wide range of information such as manufacturer, serial number, maintenance history, and more–all of which can be exported into useful and accurate reports.

The latest iteration of the software, version 6, features these updates:

  • “Mass update” function
  • Ability to create, save, and share custom filters for lists
  • Hyperlink capabilities
  • Asset maintenance cost tracking
  • Maintenance scheduling for assets
  • User security management
  • Check out abilities (with or without due dates)
  • Print capabilities for asset tags, employee badges, and location labels

MobileAsset v6 is available in three versions:

  • Standard–This includes one PC license and one mobile license for $595.
  • Pro–This includes five PC licenses and one mobile license for $1,495. (The Pro version has been upgraded with a new database manager tool.)
  • Enterprise–This includes unlimited PC licenses and five mobile licenses for $3,495. (It has been upgraded with new multi-tenant functionality). Enterprise can run on an external SQL Server database. It ships with SQL 2005 Express.
