TeamViewer Launches IoT Remote Access and Monitoring Tool

The new system, which connects to any device powered by ARM-based processors, lets users view centralized performance and status information on a web-based dashboard, create automated administration rules, and set triggers for receiving alerts.

Remote access and support tools vendor TeamViewer has introduced a new solution for managing the burgeoning volumes of Internet of Things devices coming onto SMB networks.

Called TeamViewer IoT, the system includes both remote control and remote monitoring functionality for devices powered by ARM-based processors, and supports the Windows, Linux, and Android IoT platforms.

Users can view performance and status information from those devices on a centralized, web-based dashboard, and also apply automated administration rules and triggers for receiving alerts based on preset thresholds.

The system lets technicians remote into devices without utilizing virtual private networks or opening firewalls as well, and secures those connections via encryption, two-factor authentication, and other built-in safeguards.

Administrators can customize the data displayed on the system’s dashboard via a Message Queue Telemetry Transport API and SDK. The solution comes with a REST API as well that allows it to share data with third-party management platforms.

According to TeamViewer, the new system is appropriate for everyone from value added resellers and system integrators to original equipment manufacturers and technology enthusiasts.

“TeamViewer IoT marks a significant milestone in the expansion of our product portfolio,” said Raffi M. Kassarjian, general manager of TeamViwer’s emerging products group, in a press statement. “Featuring the same level of usability, comfort and security as our flagship product, TeamViewer IoT addresses a critical need in the growing IoT market: an affordable, and easy-to-deploy IoT device management solution.”

IDC expects global spending on Internet of Things technology to reach $772 billion in 2018, with hardware accounting for $239 billion of that. Gartner, meanwhile, expects there to be nearly 11.2 billion connected things in businesses and homes by the end of this year, and 20.4 billion by 2020.

SMBs are already participating in that rapid proliferation of network-enabled hardware, and channel pros are increasingly responsible both for managing those devices and closing the potential security vulnerabilities they introduce. Tools for meeting that responsibility are still relatively rare, though. Few RMM systems, for example, include robust IoT management capabilities at present.

“Through its unique combination of secure remote access and monitoring capabilities for diverse IoT devices, TeamViewer IoT helps to deliver the benefits of device connectivity to a variety of industries and use cases,” said Kassarjian in today’s press release. “We are extremely proud of this product and will continue to enhance its possibilities by integrating additional IoT platforms quickly.”

TeamViewer released version 13 of its flagship connectivity, monitoring, and support solution last November.
