PROMISE Offers New Thunderbolt-Compatible RAID Solution

The new Pegasus hardware is a small-form product, available in four- and six-bay aluminum enclosures with 12 TB of storage.

PROMISE Technology announced this week its new RAID solution for the Intel’s Thunderbolt technology.

The new Pegasus Thunderbolt Technology DAS offers a small form factor, available in four- and six-bay aluminum enclosures with 12 TB of storage capacity.

Thunderbolt (formally Light Peak) is an interface for connecting devices and peripherals. It was developed by Intel and introduced by Apple. Now, the technology is being used by PROMISE and other innovators.

With Thunderbolt, the new Pegasus RAID solution can deliver 800 MB/s of sustained throughput, which is roughly 12 times faster than Firewire 800 and 20 times faster than USB 2.0.

Pegasus is “ideal for creative professionals, power users, and consumers who desire high-capacity external storage with advanced performance and enterprise level data protection,” states PROMISE in a press release submitted to Channel Pro-SMB.

“Intel is excited about the superior performance and simplicity Thunderbolt technology and PROMISE ‘s Pegasus family of products will bring to consumers and media professionals trying to keep up with the explosion of digital media,” says Jason Ziller, director of Thunderbolt planning and marketing at Intel Corp.

For its own part, PROMISE says it is glad to now support Thunderbolt technology. “Pegasus brings groundbreaking RAID performance to creative professionals in the studio, on location, and in the home,” says the company’s CEO James Lee. “Pegasus is the ultimate complement to PROMISE’s extensive storage offerings.”

Pegasus supports seven RAID modes, including RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50, and 60. It also features two Thunderbolt technology ports, a new aluminum enclosure, and a smart fan for reduced system noise.

PROMISE Technology’s Pegasus hardware RAID solution will be available for order from the Apple Store and authorized resellers in Q2. Pricing will be announced at a later date.
