New Parallels Report Projects the SMB Global Cloud Market to Hit $125 Billion by 2016

The top growth driver for SMB cloud services is communication and collaboration, followed by infrastructure as a service.

The latest Parallels SMB Cloud Insights report projects the SMB cloud market to expand at 26 percent CAGR to $125 billion by 2016, with communication and collaboration—comprising business class email and hosted PBX services—the top growth driver, climbing at 37 percent CAGR from $4.8 billion in 2012 to $6.5 billion in 2013, and expected to reach $20 billion by 2016. Today’s SMB uses an average of five cloud services; by 2016 that number is projected to grow to nine.

The data from the fourth annual report was revealed at the recent Parallels Summit 2014 in New Orleans. The study covers four areas that have the most current and future appeal for SMBs: infrastructure as a service (IaaS), Web presence and Web applications, hosted communications and collaboration, and other online business applications (software as a service). Parallels Inc. is a Seattle-based hosting and cloud services enablement provider.

IaaS is the second fastest-growing segment, the study finds, expected to exceed $42 billion by 2016 with a 27 percent CAGR. SaaS is projected to grow from $21 billion in 2013 to $42 billion in 2016, and Web presence and Web applications is at $13.8 billion in 2013, with growth expected to $21.2 billion by 2016.

In other findings, the U.S. SMB cloud market, at $24 billion today, is expected to grow at 17 percent CAGR through 2017, according to the report. The top growth drivers in the U.S. market are unified communications (32 percent CAGR) and other online business applications (16 percent CAGR). †

At the Summit, Parallels also introduced some new cloud services offerings.

  • Parallels Plesk 12, the company’s Web management solution, has a new security core with Atomicorp ModSecurity rules as well as a new WordPress toolkit.
  • Windows Azure Pack APS Package for deploying through the Parallels Automation platform.
  • Flexiant Cloud Orchestrator APS Package for Parallels Automation enables the deployment of public Iaas offerings based on the Flexiant Cloud Orchestrator (FCO).
  • APS Packaged IaaS offerings are now available from IBM/Softlayer and Hostway.
  • IDSync APS package from InnerApps enables hybrid cloud scenarios by leveraging the APS 2 Service Bus.
  • Parallels Cloud server is now integrated with the Flexiant FCO.

In addition, the company has redesigned Parallels Cloud University as well as rolled out the Ready-Now Marketing online marketplace.
