The North American version of Emerson Network Power‘s modular, row-based Liebert APM uninterruptible power supply (UPS) has earned ENERGY STAR certification.
A transformer-free, on-line UPS, the Liebert APM enables capacity on demand with the addition of internal FlexPower core assemblies. The assemblies enable the system to expand for capacity or redundancy in 15 kW increments up to 45 or 90kW within a single cabinet.
The FlexPower cores incorporate distributed intelligence and scalable power in a common assembly and enable configuration of a completely redundant power and control system, sized to match the capacity of the protected equipment. When power requirements change, data center managers can add capacity without increasing the system footprint. This approach enables right-sizing of the UPS, resulting in improved energy efficiency and reduced power expenditures.
“We recognize that there are applications for transformer-free UPS systems in today’s data center,” says Charles O’Donnell, Emerson Network Power’s vice president of power engineering, “and the certification of the Liebert APM proves that the technology can contribute to the overall efficiency of data centers of any size.”
As part of its larger electrical equipment efficiency improvement program, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) instituted its ENERGY STAR for UPS program earlier this year for products rated greater than or equal to 1500 watts.
To qualify for the ENERGY STAR certification, the Liebert APM was subjected to testing by a UPS-specific certification body recognized by the EPA. This certification process examines products based on average power, efficiency and efficiency variation for determination of steady-state.
