Designer Philippe Starck is collaborating with LaCie again — and it’s already sending both computer and design geeks into a frenzy. The two have just debuted the LaCie Blade Runner.

The LaCie Blade Runner is a limited-edition hard drive that has an anthropomorphic metal interior and an angular cage-like shell. In other words, it looks really cool.

Starck clearly had a lot of influence on the design, as well as the manufacturing process. The LaCie Blade Runner is custom-built with a high-speed USB 3.0 interface and cross-platform compatibility. It also has an LED power button in the shape of Starck’s signature symbol, which glows to indicate activity. Overall, it makes for a nice conversation piece for your home or office.

It’s also pretty tough, protected by a sturdy aluminum shell. That exterior also shields the hard drive from overheating, keeping all of your precious files protected.

“In my design nothing is useless — style, symbolism or functionality,” says Philippe Starck. “In the Blade Runner, the warm interior electronics are encased in a mystifying shell and the blades are the radiator that cools it down. The suspension gives space for air to circulate around the hard drive, and the metal material increases the temperature conduction.”

This isn’t the first time that LaCie and Starck have teamed up. The two collaborated on the award-winning Toaster hard drives some 20 years ago.

LaCie is selling the Blade Runner now, with a 4TB capacity, 10GB of complimentary Wuala Secure Cloud Storage, user-friendly backup software, and a $299 MSRP. Better snag one soon, because the company is limiting the production run to a mere 9,999.
