HP Announces Healthcare Hardware Portfolio

The new notebook, all-in-one, and clinical review display feature RFID and biometrics technology for secure authentication, comply with data privacy regulations, and are designed to withstand repeated sanitization in medical settings.

HP Inc. has unveiled three devices designed specifically for use by healthcare providers.

Collectively known as the HP Healthcare Edition portfolio, the new notebook, all-in-one, and clinical review display are engineered to withstand repeated sanitization, comply with the EN/IEC 60601-1-2:2015 medical hardware safety standard, and meet stringent data privacy standards while still giving busy doctors and nurses swift access to medical records.

Palo Alto, Calif.-based HP introduced the new products in conjunction with 2018 edition of the Healthcare Information Management and Systems Society’s annual conference and exhibition, which is currently underway in Las Vegas. Also known as HIMSS, that event is the healthcare industry’s biggest technology show of the year.

“Healthcare is a unique setting, and our customers are looking for a very specific set of technology solutions. The HP Healthcare Edition portfolio was designed from the ground up with the needs of clinicians in mind, resulting in a portfolio of industry-first offerings that include the world’s most secure and manageable devices,” said Alex Cho, vice president and general manager of commercial PCs at HP, in prepared remarks.

“With HP’s new Healthcare Edition notebook, All-in-One, and clinical review display, we are delivering solutions that are safer, smarter and more secure for healthcare,” he continued. “Our latest offerings help providers protect patients and their data, streamline workflows, and facilitate collaboration across the care continuum to deliver effective patient-centered care.”

According to HP, the HP EliteBook 840 G5 Healthcare Edition is the world’s first notebook PC expressly designed for use in healthcare settings. Equipped with built-in RFID technology and biometrics for single sign-on authentication, the device comes with HP Easy Clean software, which enables it to be disinfected with germicidal wipes while still in use. Citing data from the Centers for Disease Control, HP says there are approximately 1.7 million healthcare-associated infections in U.S. hospitals each year.

The new laptop also features HP’s Audio Boost and Noise Cancellation software and an IR/RGB camera to facilitate clinical collaboration via video and audio calls.

Like its more portable sibling, the new HP EliteOne 800 G4 23.8 Healthcare Edition all-in-one also comes with HP Audio Boost and HP Noise Cancellation. According to HP, it’s the world’s first AiO with dual-band onboard RFID and biometrics. The system features a dual-facing camera designed to simplify patient registration and badging as well.

HP bills the last of its three newest products, the HP Healthcare Edition HC270cr Clinical Review Display, as the world’s first clinical review monitor with an integrated RFID reader and USB-C port. Capable of supplying up to 65 watts of power to connected peripherals, the 27-inch, 3.7-megapixel device offers luminance uniformity, automatic backlight monitoring, auto image rotation, supports user calibration of medical images, and is compliant with the DICOM Part 14 medical imaging standard.

All three devices are compatible with Vidyo and Microsoft Skype for Business software for medical teleconferencing. The notebook and AiO both feature HP Sure Start G4, HP Sure Click, and HP Multi-Factor Authenticate as well, for enhanced security.

The HP EliteBook 840 G5 Healthcare Edition Notebook is expected to ship in May. Both the HP EliteOne 800 G4 23.8 Healthcare Edition and HP Healthcare Edition HC270cr Clinical Review Display are slated to reach market the following month.

HP made a similar play for vertical industry market share last August, when it rolled out ElitePOS, an all-in-one retail point-of-sale system. The company subsequently shipped a white edition of that product this January.
