The new chassis boasts new cooling and ventilation capabilities.

Fractal Design kicked off 2013 with a new design for its awarding-winning Define XL computer case. The end result is the newly launched Define XL R2 and it’s one tough beast.

The updated chassis has a slick, stylish Scandinavian design, but packs in all sorts of goodies, including cooling, ventilation, and options for expansion. It’s also got Fractal Design’s own ModuVent feature, which allows the user to choose between having the system be as silent as possible or getting the maximum airflow.

Made from a high-density noise-reducing material for optimal silence, the Define XL R2 also has a whole new internal layout, with spaces for nine PCI cards and two HDD cages. If it’s starting to look a little crowded in there, the cages can all be repositioned and you can squeeze in water-cooling radiators.

Other internal features include a three-speed fan controller in the front panel for up to three fans, a tool-less front fan holder, and three Silent Series R2 fans with hydraulic bearings for a longer-life expectancy.

Inside, there are four 5.25-inch bays, eight 3.5-inch HDD trays that are compatible with SSDs, and space for graphics cards up to 330mm in length. Fractal Design says that the case can also fit a variety of motherboards, including ATX, Micro ATX, mini-ITX, E-ATX, and XL-ATX. The front interface has spots for two USB 3.0 ports and two USB 2.0 ports, audio in/out, a power button with a blue LED, a reset button, and the aforementioned fan controller.

Measuring 232-by-558-by-560 mm, the Define XL R2 is available in black pearl and titanium grey.
