Datto Launches First Managed Power Product

Available now in the U.S. and Canada, the MP60 is a Wi-Fi-enabled power strip with six independently operated outlets that technicians can reboot remotely, increasing an MSP’s profitability by reducing the number of truck rolls they must perform.

Datto Inc. has officially shipped the first product in its Datto Managed Power portfolio for MSPs.

Called the MP60 and available now in the U.S. and Canada, the new system is a power strip with six independently operated outlets that managed service providers can stop and restart remotely. The system is designed to help MSPs boost profitability by enabling them to reboot devices without having to dispatch a technician to do the job in person.

Norwalk, Conn.-based Datto first announced its intention to create a managed power product line at the U.S. edition of its DattoCon partner event last June.

“We took a fresh look at how we could develop a power device that saves time and maximizes productivity,” said John Tippett, vice president of networking at Datto, in a blog post today. “We expect this product to have a real impact on the profitability of our partners and the uptime of their clients.”

Like other, forthcoming, products in the Datto Managed Power family, the MP60 lets technicians schedule reboots in advance as well as execute them manually. The system can also be configured to ping a customized list of IP address and websites, and then recycle power to devices automatically if it doesn’t get a response.

Other features in the new product include integrated Wi-Fi functionality that connects to a local access point automatically and cloud-based management through the same portal that partners use to administer Datto’s BDR appliances.

The system also comes with built-in reporting capabilities that let users scrutinize power usage patterns, and provides 4,000 joules of surge protection. If surge protection becomes depleted, the product’s lifetime warranty entitles owners to a free replacement unit.

Two USB C and two USB A ports are available to power external devices. The unit includes an Ethernet port as well.

Datto Managed Power is the vendor’s second foray beyond its roots as a maker of BDR appliances into different kinds of hardware for MSPs and their customers. In January of last year, Datto shipped its first set of networking products, including switches, access points, and a six-port router with integrated unified threat management and 4G LTE failover functionality.

Datto, which agreed to be acquired by private investor Vista Equity Partners and then merged with managed services software maker Autotask Corp. last October, is building out an extensive catalog of offerings spanning from RMM and PSA software to appliance-based and cloud-to-cloud BDR, file sync and share, and networking.
