CompTIA Publishes New Security and Managed Print Best Practice Guides

Available free to members and non-members, the latest additions to CompTIA’s Channel Standards library draw on the collected experience and wisdom of CompTIA and its members.

On opening day of its†ChannelCon 2016 event in Hollywood, Fla., CompTIA, a nonprofit association for the technology industry, unveiled two new industry standards for IT channel companies as part of its ongoing effort to promote the adoption and usage of best business practices. The CompTIA Channel Standard for Cybersecurity and the CompTIA Channel Standard for Managed Print Providers are available free of charge to CompTIA Registered Users and Premier Members, as well as non-members.

Introduced at CompTIA’s 2016 Annual Member Meeting in March, Channel Standards are best practice documents designed to offer concrete recommendations on running an IT services business and performing key technical functions more effectively. The two new ones introduced today join earlier guides for IT solution providers and managed service providers. All four documents draw on the collected experience and wisdom of CompTIA and its members.†

“We’ve been doing this a long time,” observes Miles Jobgen, director of CompTIA’s Trustmarks program. “We’ve got a lot of information that I think is valuable for these guys to help run their business.”

Trustmarks are credentials that provide third-party validation of an IT company’s knowledge and capabilities in key technology markets.†Based on the educational content that Trustmark holders master before receiving that accreditation, Channel Standards provide an initial entry point into the more demanding Trustmark program, and give companies not interested in earning a Trustmark a way to still benefit from CompTIA’s expertise.

“Even if you don’t go on to the Trustmark you’re going to get value out of this and you’re going to be a better business as a result,” Jobgen says.

The new cybersecurity standard is based on the the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s†Framework for Improving Critical Infrastructure Cybersecurity, which†provides recommended guidelines for the five pillars of cybersecurity: identify, protect, detect, respond, and recover.†The managed print standard details proven techniques for handling four critical managed print business functions: business generation, delivery and operations, customer relations, and business direction.

Though CompTIA has no firm plans to develop further standards at this point, Jobgen said an additional one covering cloud computing is a strong possibility for the future, especially since the response to the first two documents so far has been encouraging. The IT solution provider standard, for example, has been downloaded some 500 to 600 times to date.

“That’s a very nice bump as far as exposure goes,” Jobgen notes, given that some 650 CompTIA members total have earned the much older IT solution provider Trustmark to date.
