Helping Out the Red Cross at Lenovo Accelerate

D&H Distributing invited attendees at last week's event to assemble “comfort kits” and donated $1 for each, while Lenovo kicked in fund-matching and Twitter-based donations. By Colleen Frye

When disaster strikes, many turn to the Red Cross for help. And last week, the Red Cross got some help from the collaborative efforts of Lenovo and D&H Distributing Co. at the Lenovo Accelerate event held at The Wynn Resort and Casino in Las Vegas.

On Tuesday, May 8, D&H invited Lenovo Accelerate attendees to participate in a fund raiser for the American Red Cross by helping to assemble “comfort kits” containing toiletries and personal amenities that will be given out to disaster victims in need. Moreover, for every comfort kit created, D&H is donating $1 to the Red Cross.

In addition to D&H’s contribution, Lenovo donated $1 for any tweet made using the hashtags #LenovoAccelerate18 and #Donation during the conference. Lenovo will also match 50 percent of reseller donations made directly to Red Cross via www.redcross.org/lenovo during the month of May, up to a maximum of $25,000 total.

D&H, a major provider of SMB and consumer technologies to the North American high-tech channel, based in Harrisburg, Pa., was the exclusive sponsor of this fundraiser.

Tom Guagliardi, executive director at D&H, tells me that Lenovo approached the distributor about sponsoring the effort. Since the Red Cross is one of the charities supported by D&H Cares—a foundation dedicated to charity, health, wellness, and conservation supported by D&H employee co-owners, customers, and vendor partners—Guagliardi says it was a great fit.  

There was a station set up with the supplies at the event, and Guagliardi says attendees were encouraged at all the general sessions to go build a kit. Participants could also include a note in the bag, sending best wishes and thoughts to the recipient.

“We had a lot of people stop by, and if they didn’t build a kit, they were asking how they can help,” says Guagliardi. The target was 1,500 kits, one for every attendee. He says enough kits were built that they ran out of supplies.

 “It was a terrific event, and we’ve very grateful for Lenovo for allowing us to do that,” Guagliardi says. “It raised a lot of attention about disaster relief. It made people think about what they could do in their own areas, and they said it made them start thinking about what they could do to help others. It was a powerful message.”

Guagliardi says it was the first time he headed up such an effort, adding that he would look to do something similar at future events.

It's a great idea. So kudos to D&H, Lenovo, and all the attendees who stopped to assemble a kit.
