Supermicro Expands Double-Sided Storage Family of Server Chassis Models

The SC417 supports up to 72 hot-swap 2.5-inch SAS2 hard drives in a single 4U chassis.

Super Micro Computer Inc. has expanded its Double-Sided Storage family of server chasses with the addition of the new SC417 model.

The SC417 supports up to 72 hot-swap 2.5-inch SAS2 hard drives in a single 4U chassis and up to 88 in upcoming JBOD configuration. “The previous maximum in the market was 48 drives in the front,” states Supermicro in a press release to EH Publishing. “Supermicro has added 24 more hot-swap drives in the rear.”

Supermicro now has over 14 new chassis models available with 6 Gb/s SAS2 expanders. According to the company’s CEO Charles Liang, the expanded storage servers represent an increased interest in storage. “With the demonstrated strong market demand for high storage capacity,” he says, “we can closely support our valued channel partners with these leading-edge storage solutions.”

The continued trend toward higher density and reduced power consumption was at the heart of SC417’s design. “SC417 storage solutions configured with 2.5-inch Toshiba enterprise SAS2 drives not only double the drive density, but also reduce the power consumption per drive by over 65 percent,” states Supermicro in its press release.

Supermicro’s full suite of 2U, 3U, 4U, and Double-Sided Storage S AS2 expander chassis incorporate such features such redundant cooling designs, SES-2 enclosure management, and iPass cables.

The storage solutions also incorporate LSI 6 Gb/s SAS silicon and MegaRAID technology, including the latest LSI 6Gb/s SAS expander and RAID-on-Chip (ROC) ICs.

The E16 version single Edge-expander chassis can cascade up to 240 physical devices, while the E26 models with dual Edge-expanders support redundant data path failover protection. These SAS2 chassis all support a wide range of UP and DP serverboards up to 13.68 inches by 13 inches, including those optimized for eight-core Xeon 5600 or the latest twelve-core Opteron processors (and those with 18 memory slots for up to 288 GB of memory).

The chassis also support up to seven full-height, full-length expansion cards.
