NEC Teams with Microsoft and Intel, Shares the Fruit of that Effort at InfoComm

In Las Vegas, NEC Display Solutions of America showcases a digital signage proof-of-concept running on a validated software platform from Microsoft Windows Embedded and Intel Technology.

LCD display and projector innovator NEC Display Solutions of America has rolled out a new initiative aimed at advancing the adoption of digital signage industry standards along with new technologies that share that same vision. Attendees of last week’s InfoComm 2010 conference in Las Vegas got a sneak peak.

At the conference, NEC showcased a digital signage proof-of-concept that ran on a validated software platform from Microsoft Windows Embedded and Intel Technology. The proof-of-concept demonstrated the ways in which network operators and advertisers could create interactive, immersive experiences that communicate with consumers.

NEC says the dynamic nature of the platform will enable network operators and advertisers to reach viewers and customers in a manner not available before. Based on an Intel Core processor and running the Microsoft Windows Embedded Standard 7 operating system, the demo featured NEC display technologies and delivered a platform with digital, connected, and intelligence capabilities.

“Technology leaders in the digital signage space bring clarity to the industry,” explains NEC Display Solutions president and COO Pierre Richer. “The ultimate promise of mass communication is relevance to the individual, enabling one-to-one communication. Intel Technology and Microsoft’s Windows Embedded Standard 7 operating system, coupled with the VUKUNET platform, fulfill that vision.”

“This proof-of-concept provides the vision and motivation for the industry to develop intelligent digital signage solutions,” said Intel’s director of digital signage Jose Avalos at the conference. “With Intel technology, digital signage developers are able to design remotely managed and energy efficient, scalable, and interoperable applications for more interactive and media-rich solutions.”

For Microsoft’s part, the company’s senior product manager for Windows Embedded Ashwin Kulkarni said at the conference that his company is “committed to helping partners simplify development and create solutions with rich, connected user experiences.”

†Kulkarni added, “We’re delighted to work with NEC to meet market needs through the optimized digital signage platform from Microsoft and Intel.”
