Eaton-Loyal System Builders and System Architects Now Have Open-Source Options

Channel pros can now use Eaton’s UPS solutions within Xen virtualized architecture, thanks to new free software from the power management manufacturer.

Eaton Corp.’s Intelligent Power Protector software is now compatible with Xen virtualized architecture.

Xen is an open-source managed server virtualization platform for data centers. Compatibility with Intelligent Power Protector means system builders can choose to use Eaton’s uninterruptible power systems (UPSs) and power management software in protecting SMBs’ virtual machines and virtual servers.

In an Eaton Corp. press release statement submitted to Channel Pro-SMB, the ability to integrate with Xen “furthers Eaton’s foray into the open-source community with software that is flexible and secure.”

The Xen hypervisor is the controlling software within the server architectures. System builders like it because it’s a fast, secure virtualization infrastructure solution. It is employed to reduce data center costs by transforming static and complex IT environments into more dynamic, easy-to-manage virtualized data centers.

Eaton now hopes system builders will add Intelligent Power Protector as a means of facilitating automatic, graceful shutdown of virtual machines, servers, and network devices powered by Eaton’s UPSs.
“Eaton has championed the Network UPS Tools open-source project for many years and strongly believes in the power of open-source solutions,” states Hervé Tardy, senior vice president and general manager, in the Eaton press release.

Eaton’s Intelligent Power Protector software resides on the Xen hypervisor and supports specific server architectures, including Citrix XenServer 5.6 x86, open-source Xen 2.6 on Red Hat 5 x86/64 and open-source Xen 3.2 on Debian 5.0 (Lenny) x86/64.

This integration follows on the heels of Eaton’s power management software compatibility with VMware and Microsoft virtualization server solutions.

Intelligent Power Protector is free of charge and available for download (Linux-compatible version) as well as scripts for the Xen hypervisor applications.
